Question 13 [Statement]: A researcher dissected the retinas of 20 randomly sampled fish belonging to each of two subspecies of guppy in Venezuela. Using a sophisticated laboratory apparatus, he measured two of fish to find the wavelengths of visual light to which the cones of the retina were most sensitive. The goal was to whether the fish from the two-subspecies differed is the wavelength of light that they were most sensitive to. Questions: ( A ) What are the two variables being associated in this study? ( B ) Which is the explanatory variable and which is the response variable? ( C ) Is this an experimental study or an observational study? Why? Answers: ( A ) One variable is the subspecies (group) of guppy in Venezuela . The second variable being associated is the most sensitive wavelength of light . ( B ) The explanatory variable in this study is the group (subspecies) of guppy in Venezuela and the response variable is wavelength of light . ( C ) This study is an observational study . First, as stated in the book, “The researcher had no control over which units fall into which groups ” (Whitlock). In other words, the researcher had absolutely no control over which individuals belong to each subspecies main reason . Therefore, this study is solely observational .

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
