Common signs and symptoms of Peptic Ulcers are dull stomach pain, weight loss, loss of appetite (usually due to pain), nausea or vomiting, bloating, feeling easily full, burping, acid reflux, and heartburn. Peptic Ulcers occur when the thick layer of mucus that protects your stomach from digestive juices is reduced allowing the digestive acids to eat away at the tissues that line the stomach, causing an ulcer. Your doctor may use a scope to examine your upper digestive system (endoscopy). Using the endoscope, your doctor looks for ulcers in the stomach lining. If your doctor detects an ulcer, small tissue samples (biopsy) may be removed for examination in a lab. A biopsy can also identity. A biopsy can also determine if H. pylori is in your stomach lining. ( ) Diagnosis In order to detect an ulcer, your doctor may first take a medical history and perform a physical exam. You then may need to undergo diagnostic test such as laboratory test for H. pylori. Labratory test for H. pylori may be in the form of a blood, stool, or breath test. The breath test is the most accurate. Blood test are generally inaccurate and should not be routinely used.
