Foundation, and Mayim Bialik, graduate of neuroscience from UCLA say about the process of thinking about thinking, metacognition, as quoted in Mindshift’s, “The Role of Metacognition in Learning and Achievement.” They explain, “that it can improve the application of knowledge, skills, and character qualities in realms beyond the immediate context in which they were learned.” And that, “Even within academic settings, it is valuable—and often necessary—to apply principles and methods across disciplinary lines.” (Mindshift). My prior knowledge was not enough to properly complete the assignment and fulfill the deep dive into my thought process. This reflection was the first time that I was expected to perform metacognition, and as

academics like Fibel say it plays an important role in a student’s learning even across different situations. Without any knowledge of the genre I was unable to infer the expectations from other works, so I ended up failing in its application which resulted in a reflection that was unable to articulate my thought process. However, this was not the last time I was expected to reflect of theway I think, in fact it was a key component of the course. Determined to improve I delved into the readings and ideas our professor wanted us to see. This idea of metacognition was explored, even if not my name, by other writers like Mellix and Sommers. I saw that examples for this genre of writing were everywhere, I just needed to look for them. With these examples to learn from, I was able to progressively develop more and more to meet the expectations of my reflections and grow my skills as a writer. This connects to the threshold concept talked about by Shirley Rose, professor of English and director of ASU Writing Programs in the English Department on the Tempe campus, “All writers have more to learn”, since my own personal experiences weren’t enough to satisfy the needs of the writing situation. She says, “Writers soon discover that writing strategies that are effective for them in one context are often inappropriate and ineffective in another context in which they need or want to write”. (NWWK 94). So, I had to open myself up to taking what others have learned and use that knowledge as a base to develop my own ideas and meet the expectations of an unfamiliar genre. If writers cannot unravel the expectations as to meet them, it will be impossible to create good writing since they will not know which conventions to follow so that they might adapt to the new writing situations and genres. When writers figure out the expectations of their situation, good writing will be producedonce they use their prior and their new knowledge to meet those expectations. More specifically they must remix and assemble both new and old knowledge to use it most effectively. However,

different situations require different amounts of remix and assemblage. So, they’ll know good writing has been produced when a writer knows how to use both their prior and new knowledge.
