tradeoff must always focus on handling the patient’s care needs and their family to ensure that no power abuses arise. The American Nurses Association (2015) focuses on this reciprocity and indicates that the patient should not be used as a means to an end of the nurse’s own self- gratification. Summarizing Tronto’s (2012) views, a nurse must take care of self to be able to take care of others. By following self-care stratagems, a nurse is likely to find the enthusiasm and energy to implement the four elements of caring as mentioned above to result in positive outcomes for the patient. Conclusion Most nurses if not all, have interacted with Tronto’s caring concept. Nevertheless, a large number of them are unaware of the works of Gilligan, which set the foundations for modern ethics of care theories. Care as outlined in the preceding sections is a vital aspect of human development, and is primarily focused on physical desires. On a biological level, caring is significant for kids to stay alive, but also for patients who are reliant on end of life care. Ethics of

PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTABILITY 10 care emanate from the notion that caring is fundamental to the survival of humans. In fact, care entwines humans into networks of relations that enhance their wellbeing. Nonetheless, when an individual chooses to become a nurse, they have to make an ethical pledge to care for every sick person. Such a commitment to caring ought not to taken casually, as it is a reflection of the ANA’s Code of Ethics for Nurses – clinicians must respect the rights, dignity, and worth of all humans regardless of their scope of their health problem. Care is essential if a person, such as Mrs. James, encounters health problems owing to failure to comply with treatment plans for her alcoholism and diabetes. Setting aside personal prejudices and biases to apply Tronto’s stages of care is difficult. The four aspects of care outline that appropriate caring entails more than just virtuous intentions – nursing practice is the aggregation of mindsets, actions, and understanding of a given situation and selection of a suitable care plan that brings the best outcome for a patient. Professional accountability in nursing can be perceived as a moral duty and therefore, a burden to do something, or a vow to attend to and become ardently concerned about a patient’s life.
