too late. I saw the bloody heap that had been my sister. He said the bitch bit him, his belt was still undone. He never saw the pistol; I shot him in the head, and stumbled out of the room. I shambled out into the cold, some of the guards yelled at me; I didn’t hear what they said. I felt nothing; I just kept walking. I passed a snow bank that must have been a mass grave at one point because I saw dozens of hands sticking out just above the snow. I wondered how many of them were really dead, and how many were just waiting for the spring thaw to set them free. As I walked past I brushed my fingers along those of the dead, and I knew they were the only family I had left. I walked for a long while before the metal of the pistol began to burn my hand, it woke me from my trance and I knew what had to be done. I pressed the gun against my temple, and in the moment before I pulled the trigger I thought that life is beautifully painful.
