Through meeting each other the two realize they are not living up to their true selves . After times goes on and their relationship evolves Federic gets news that he has orders to retreat and Candice says she is pregnant with his child . It is during this retreat that Fedrics idea of masculinity begins to change . Through a series of events, one involving the sickness of Candice, Federics male identity transforms from self-serving to altruistic . While fleeing the army he begins coming into his new identity . He realizes that duty and courage in war are not masculine but surviving war was and that was exactly what he had to do . Throughout both novels a topic that is not touched on much is the mention of race . At the time that both of these novels were written there were still many ongoing issues involving race

which begs the question “why was it not brought up more?” The only race shown or mentioned throughout both novels is Caucasian . One reason is that when these novels were written, equality in races wasn’t a very popular idea so the author may have chosen to not add anything involving race because it could put people off . Another reason race wasn’t mentioned is because many of the jobs played by the characters were not worked by another race in the first place .

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
