Use task conflict beneficially Communication- process by which information is shared between team members o Communicator issues- § Communicators must be competent (be able to encode and receive messages effectively) § Emotions and emotional intelligence can play a major role in how someone interprets a message o Noise- § Things that obstruct the ability to send or receive messages § Can be physical or figurative o Information richness- amount and depth of information that gets transmitted in a massage § Face-to-face is the richest medium to use § Depends on the task and message for the amount of richness needed § Active listening- being engaged, asking questions § Nonverbal communication- anything you use to communicate w/o words Facial expressions, inflection and tone Only a small percent of the message content is the actual words, the rest is non-verbal o Network structure - the pattern of communication that occurs regularly among each of its members Centralization- all communication goes through one or only a couple people Decentralization- communication goes through everyone and everyone is in the loop § All channel- communication goes through everyone, highly decentralized § Circle- sort of like sequential interdependence, playing telephone as a kid § “Y”- sort of a hybrid between all channel and wheel § wheel- communication goes through only one person, highly centralized when work is simple and straightforward- centralized communication works best

when work is complex and difficult- decentralized communication works best members prefer decentralized because they feel in the loop Team states- specific types of feelings and thoughts that coalesce in the minds of team members as a consequence of their experience working together o Cohesion- when team members develop strong emotional bonds with each other, can foster high levels of motivation and commitment to team § Not always a good thing Groupthink- associated with feelings of overconfidence about the team’s capabilities o VIDEO: SECRET OF MY SUCCESS- groupthink happens when Michael J. Foxx said their ideas, he was also being the devil’s advocate o Potency- degree to which members believe that the team can be effective across a variety of situations and tasks § High potency- members are confident in their team § Low potency- members begin to question the goals of the team o Mental models- the level of common understanding among team members with regard to important aspects of the team and its tasks § Can anticipate what other members need o Transactive memory- refers to how specialized knowledge is distributed among team members that results in an effective system of memory for the team § Members need specialized knowledge and a memory of who has what specialized knowledge Importance of Team Processes o Performance and commitment are not to the organization but to the team itself and future tasks to be complete by the team o Moderate positive relationship between teamwork processes and team performance o
