bit about Amal Kassir, and later on, I will recite my excerpt. ( Transition Let’s begin with a little background information about who Amal is.) Background Context (1.5 mins) Amal Kassir is a young Syrian American international spoken word poet and artist. She has performed her poetry in twelve different countries and five dozen cities. According to Writespace, Amal has also lectured and taught workshops in orphanages, refugee camps, community centers, and youth prisons. The majority of her work was influenced by the Syrian war and “the plight of the oppressed all over the world” (Writespace). ( Transition Now moving on to the excerpt…) Excerpt (2 mins) “They say the shortest distance between two people is a story. Well, I will elaborate on that to say that the greatest distance you can travel in the shortest amount of time, is by asking someone their name. The way we name ourselves is a reflection of who we are, our declarations, family histories, the things we believe, the morals we abide by, our homes, cultures, transformations. Like a Mohammed turned Mo, or a Lisa Pizza turned Iman. And how we name others, and how,
