Ascension does provide a patient/family Bill of Rights but it is difficult to locate. This writer has been a long-time employee of Ascension Health and failed to easily locate it on their website. A truly patient/family-friendly Bill of Rights would be easily accessible.[Advisors]No strengths are noted regarding advisors. Patients and families do not serve on any advisory committees. They do not participate in quality and safety rounds. And there areno patient and family advisory councils.[Quality Improvement] Daily, unit managers and team leaders round to interview patients and families about their quality of care, needs and areas of improvement. The input received is integrated into daily huddle meeting notes and some of this information is taken into consideration as part of the hospital’s operational aims/goals. For example, Midtown has been reevaluating food services. Additional questions have been included in rounding as operational changes are being considered and executed. Patients and families do not actively participate in quality improvement teams, task forces, safety and risk meetings.[Personnel] Patients and families have no input in job descriptions, interviews, or new hire orientation. Employees have an annual required cultural competency. This competency

The patient care environment is supportive of family presence. Except for intensive care rooms, patient rooms are large enough to accommodate a folding cot for one overnight guest. Unfortunately, there are not enough cots to supply every room in the hospital. Due to room size, fire codes limit two chairs per room. The hospital does not offer family rooms or lounges.[Information/Education] Resource rooms are not available for patients/families nor do they serve as educators for staff. Ascension St. Thomas does offer a patient portal for access to medical records, the ability to send and receive messages to and from providers, and request prescription refills from St. Thomas providers. [Diversity and Disparities] Access to an interpreter is not provided until a nurse arrives at the patient room with a dual-handset phone to call an interpreter service. The poor and underserved are a major focus of the ministry at St. Thomas Midtown. Ongoing research into thecurrent age/ethnicity/healthcare gaps leads to a free annual medical mission event that provides free healthcare services and referrals. Social workers assess for uninsured medical needs and assist patients with charity applications while in the hospital.
