4. President Lincoln failed to mention the similarities between the American Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg because he felt there were more important issues to be focused on. Leaving this piece of information out of his historical speech allowed for a higher focus on more comprehensive issues, such as making sure the hard work that the soldiers gave towards the war was not for no cause, and that they were properly celebrated and appreciated for what they did do. Also, to call the people that are carrying on their work to action, letting them know that their work is not done. 7. The speech given by Lincoln appeals primarily to emotions of his audience. Two sentences that could demonstrate this appeal is, “We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that the nation might live” and “It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us-- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion; that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain…”. My rationale for choosing these two sentences was because they really tug on the heartstrings of the audience, and set a tone of mourning for those lost. Lincoln includes an ethical appeal at the end of his speech, conveying how there will be “a new birth of freedom; and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth”.
