Now that there are more internet technologies available, organizations are able to take advantages of these advances to help them with their business processes, sometimes even giving them some competitive advantage. Typically, the cross-functional enterprise applications include installing enterprise resource planning, supply chain management, and customer relationship management software (O’Brien 240.) Enterprise resource planning (ERP) is a cross-functional enterprise system driven by an integrated suite of software modules that supports the basic internal business processes of a company. This software will typically process the data from, and track the status of sales, inventory, shipping and invoicing, as well as forecast raw material and human resource requirements. This gives the company real-time view of their core business processes. It assists in order processing and inventory management (O’Brien 249). Supply chain management, according to the text, is also a cross-functional interenterprise system that uses information technology to help support and manage links between some of the company’s key business process to those if its suppliers, customers, and business partners. The coal of this is to create fast, efficient, and low-cost network of business relationships to get a company’s products from concept to market. The supply chain is sometimes referred to as the value chain, because each supply chain should add value to the products or services of the final product.
