Pathways to becoming an excessive gambler In her book, Pathways to Excessive Gambling: A Societal Perspective on Youth and Adult Gambling Pursuits, Charlotte Fabiansson (2016) is categorical that social recreational gambling gradually moves to excessive gambling behavior because of available gambling opportunities and incentives. Charlotte notes that these opportunities are advertized in the media where a win in gambling is equated to everlasting happiness without any major problems in life. The portrayal leads others to believe that gambling offers happiness and life fulfillment. Secondly, gambling is legal in most countries, including the United States, and is recognized as a legitimate way to acquire financial wealth. Charlotte opines that the urge to get an easy way to improving one’s financial status lures many into gambling. The winners are praised, advertised and marveled at, while losers are rarely acknowledged. In fact, the negative impact of losing in gambling is never considered worth in the gambling industry. Opportunities like electronic gaming machines have attracted many people to access some form of gambling and thus they attract social, regular, and problem gamblers (Fabiansson, 2016). In the study, Charlotte notes that most female excessive gamblers were introduced to gambling activities through club visits by friends and work mates. However, males initiate their gambling contacts. Further, males take a short time to move from recreational to excessive gambling than their female counterparts. Again, males are likely to start their gambling activities earlier than females. Additionally, females prefer electronic machine gambling while males pursue all forms of gambling (Fabiansson, 2016). However, Charlotte’s study indicates that the most effective pathway to excessive gambling for both men and women is the electronic gaming machine. Excessive gamblers have fantasies that make them believe that they are clever and smarter than other bettors. They always think that it will work for them and get more involved because they know that they will beat the system. Consequently, they derive their self-esteem when they win and consider themselves lucky. When they lose, they suffer monetary loss and
