Fundamentally the theory maintains that deviant manners are learnable and be learned through interactions with people with deviant behaviors. Accordingly to Sutherland, these associations help an individual to learn the motives, rationale and techniques for particular crimes among others (Delisi, 2013). Here is the story of Tom and Jerry. Tom is a smart, responsible, dedicated, respectable straight A student. Jerry on the other hand was a social deviant/criminal. Jerry made committing crime such as shoplifting, drinking, using drugs, selling drugs and having sex among other things seem like the cool thing to do, therefore, Tom followed along. Because Jerry taught Tom that going to school, listening to his parents was an undesired or uncool thing to do, Tom therefore favored the new behaviors. Differential associations can vary in frequency, duration, priority and intensity (Delisi, 2013). Even though,
