There are eight security features that a patient portal needs to have. They are 1) Security and privacy that meet federal Meaningful Use (MU) requirements, 2) database features that are encrypted, 3) extensive password protection, 4) role- based access controlled provided, 5) audit controls, 6) consent, 7) privacy policy and terms and conditions that are custom, and 8) PCI compliance ("8 Security Features You Need in an EHR or Patient Portal," 2017). The use of Certified Electronic Health Record Technology is necessary for the patient portal to meet the MU requirements ("8 Security Features You Need in an EHR or Patient Portal," 2017). . When data is encrypted, it helps to safeguard the data whether it is in use or not . When there is extensive password protection, the patient can be sure that not anyone is able to login as them and gain access to their information ("8 Security Features You Need in an EHR or Patient Portal," 2017).
