Chile is also known for its arts and music scene. Many festivals are filled with bright colors and artistic expressionism. The mere presence of artists in an area show there is a lot of local culture and culture can positively affect the local economy by bringing businesses into the area. “The presence of artists and creative people tends to attract highly-educated and talented workers” (Boualam, 2014, p. 12). The presence of a highly-educated work force will help lure companies to the region increasing the local business economy. Social Structures and Organizations The Chilean economy is a free market economy that allows industries and companies to conduct business without, or least with very little, government influence. This free market economy has helped Chile form many trade agreements with countries across the globe allowing the local companies to more easily become global businesses. Much of the Chilean free market economy freedoms are now in place due to the very strict authoritarian government under General Pinochet which regulated every business and did not all any foreign trade without his influence and approval (Lear & Collins, 1995, p. 10-11). GLOBAL BUSINESS CULTURAL ANALYSIS: CHILE 16 to an end as Democracy became the government style again in Chile. As the democracy grew stronger in the mid-1980s through the early-1990s, the economic regulations became weaker or completely disappeared (1995, p. 12). How do both of the above items compare with U.S. culture and business? Compare and Contrast Chile and the United States of America share several values, customs and systems, yet there are also some very distinct differences in them as well, especially in relation to business dealings. The main difference in communication among the two countries is the language difference. Chile’s national language is Spanish whereas the United States does not have an official national language but 79% of the citizens speak English (Evanson & Scroope, 2016, p. 2). Though 13% of the population in the United States speak Spanish (2016, p. 2), very few speak the Chilean dialect of Spanish that was heavily influenced by the indigenous peoples of Chile. Culturally, there is a huge difference between the United States and Chile in that only 77.2% of United States citizens claim any form of religion whereas 96.6% of the Chileans list some form of religion. The largest religious group in the United States is the Protestants at 46.5% followed by Roman Catholics at 20.8%. In Chile the Protestants only account for 16.4% of the population while the Roman Catholics account for 66.7% of the population (2016, p. 2-5). This difference in the number of members who claim a religion may explain some of the other key differences in the cultures and business manners.
