spouse’s assets then more than likely you weren’t involved in putting in the work required to maintain them. Which means you do not necessarily deserve half. Not to say that the woman is always the one to be in this situation, nowadays it is more common for a woman to be the primary breadwinner and the husband to be the primary household caregiver. To make it fair the “American law doesn’t distinguish among divorce cases based on financial stakes…” (Ryznars 120). Although normally the earner of the two with the greater income does receive a larger amount due to the larger contribution towards the marriage (121). As it should be, that way people aren’t taken advantage of in throughout the process of the divorce settlement. Over all its very evident that divorce is a very serious step to take if a marriage is no longer working out. That is why before even taking the next step towards marriage you have to make sure that two of you are mentally and emotionally prepared to take on the obstacles that life throws at you as a couple. Reasons for marriage have greatly evolved over time just as Coontz describes and has led to marriage as we know it today. Although the rates for divorce have lowered from what it used to be in the 19 th and 20 th century the process is still very tedious and traumatic. Once things get to this point it starts to effect the many others in your life and Jordan 5

especially the children. Children can be greatly affected in these situations and result in to emotional distress and mental illnesses. It’s circumstances like this that cause the children to be so damaged as they get older. Also the adults in the marriage are greatly affected due to the time consuming settlement process. Having a great deal of knowledge on this topic can be extremely resourceful when considering marriage. Not alluding that its necessary to have a pessimistic attitude towards your relationship as opposed to being happy but it can be extremely beneficial to be realistic with yourself. Jordan 6
