5. Why are magma chambers located usually 3 to 6 kilometers beneath the summit of a volcano?  (page 113, para 1) Below 6 kms, the surrounding rocks are more dense than magma, thus causing it to eise: above 3 kms  the surrounding rocks are less dense than magma, impeding its rise. 6. What is the pattern of Kilauea's eruptions in terms of tilting, volume of lava, and eruptive frequency?  (page 113, para 2 to page 113, para 3) The pattern of Kilauea’s slow outward tilting before an eruption and rapid inward tilting during a flank  eruption indicates a slow, almost continuous movement of magma from the deep source to the shallow  chamber and rapid and intermittent eruptions from the shallow chamber to the surface.  Many  eruptions stop until the shallow chamber has been recharged. Kilauea has been erupting for 21 years,  and it has been a net deflation, but the calculated volume of magma that would cause this deflation is  small compared with the total volume of lava that has erupted. 7. What is a "hot spot"? (page 113, para 4 to page 114) A “hot spot” is the plume and its molten top that stays in the same location for millions of years as the  plate slides over this source of magma. 8. When did a change in the direction of plate movement of the Hawaiian Island Chain occur and what  is the physical evidence for that change of direction? (page 117, para 1 to page 118) A change in direction of plate movement occurred about 43 million years ago.  The Emperor  Seamount are a dogleg of the Hawaiian chain, formed when the drift of the Pacific Plate was more  northward than its present Northwestward movement. The plates have left their tracks in the form of  volcanic scars and magnetic fields, and those tracks reveal a complex yet consistent global pattern. 9. What are some examples of "hot spot" volcanism other than Hawaii? (page 118, para 4 to page  119)
