APPLICATION OF A GRAND THEORY3connectedness with other people and the world” (Petiprin, 2016, para. 3).Neuman definesnursing as a form of caring for the health experiences of the patient. The nurse's role is to helpacquire an awareness of the patient and family members about the status of the patient. LikeRogers, Newman believes that human is unitary (Meleis, 2012, p. 312; Petiprin, 2016) andcannot be divided into parts. Nevertheless, with Newman, it includes people who have presenceor absence of a disease and is incorporated into its universe of open system and is identified bypatterns of consciousness (Petiprin, 2016). The goal of Health as Expanding Consciousnesstheory is to promote a higher level of awareness that could aid the patient and family tounderstand the disease process, its recuperation, and its prevention. The knowledge development of these theories was based on the philosopher, like Hegel, and theoretician, like Rogers. It was mentioned above that Newman's Health as ExpandingConsciousness theory was influenced by Roger's Theory of Unitary Human Being. For King,TGA is open and nonlinear, and continuous evaluation is needed to achieve the goal (Caceres,2015), which is the same as what Hegel mentioned in his dialectic theory, progress would neverbe linear (The School of Life, 2017).Both theories can be used in the nursing process; nevertheless, their approach aredifferent. King focuses on wellness by addressing the interpersonal relationship with the patient. While Neuman believes that to promote positive health outcome, the patient and the environment(family and nurse) should be conscious of the experience of the first. Though they differ in themethods used, both of the theories use communication as medium, promotes relationship andinteraction, and have a goal toward improving the quality of life. Likewise, both theories can beused in nursing practice. Though, King's TGA can be applied in a more modern way, like intelehealth, while Newman's theory is more beneficial if implemented in a face-to-face approach.
APPLICATION OF A GRAND THEORY4Aside from TGA, King also developed a conceptual system. She emphasizes that tounderstand TGA better, one must know the conceptual system (Caceres, 2015). It is amultidimensional scheme that includes personal, interpersonal, and social systems. The nurse
