Personal AssessmentAccording to Benner’s Self-Assessment Novice to Expert Model I am starting as novice in my field (Benner, 2001). I have a basic understand of my role, but have no previous experience within this role. I have previous knowledge as a registered nurse, but no knowledge as a nurse practitioner. I have seen nurse practitioners on a personal level for office visits, but have not worked alongside them. The only previous knowledge I possess is what I have learned thus far in my master’s degree. Within analyzing the questions that this model encompasses, I have completed a personal assessment. The areas of my career I most want to focus on are my skills, working with pediatric patients, prescribing medications and developing relationships withmy patients and co-workers. Skills that APN’s possess are something I am not familiar with. I amexcited to learn the boundaries of the APN in multiple different settings. I am excited to expand my skills with pediatric patients because that it not something I have been familiar with in my nursing career. I look forward to assisting with managing a panel of patient’s care and giving them someone who will look deeper into their issues. I look forward to being the type of primaryprovider who can realize that the decisions made affects them on every level. I look forward to helping patients to understand what to do and how to manage their care at home and within everyday life. I do fear making the wrong decisions for my patients. I fear them not responding well to my treatments or my approach to patient care. I hope to gain lifelong patient relationshipsand skills that will continue to develop for the rest of my life. I hope to gain more than just a career change, but a life that I love to walk into every day. Within my first month in my new position I hope to understand my role. I want to start with a new mindset as my role changes
PERSONAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN4from registered nurse to advanced nurse practitioner. I hope to develop a sense of self-understanding within my environment and co-worker and patient relationship. Within my second month I hope to start developing a sense of patient panel and understanding of my day to day duties and scope of practice. Within my third month I hope to start becoming an asset to my facility as I will see more patients and understand my panel of patients and cases. I hope to fully understand medication prescribing. In the remainder of my year I hope to develop a sense of whoI am within this new role and go from a novice to advanced beginner.
