Hubble data has also advanced scientific ideas about the nature of dark matter and dark energy.
Search for Dark Matter
Will the universe keep expanding until all the heat energy of the cosmos is reduced to rubble? Or
is there sufficient matter in the universe to force a reversal of the big bang expansion? That is to
say, at some point, will the universe begin to contract? This would lead to a “big crunch.” The
answer is unknown.
About ninety-five percent of the universe is composed of
dark matter
(twenty-five percent) and
dark energy
(seventy percent). Dark matter adds gravity to the visible universe. Dark energy
repels gravity over the universe as a whole. Thus, it’s possible that the combined effects of dark
matter and dark energy may be sufficient to produce a big crunch.
