DNA strand and then use the codon chart according to the mRNA you synthesized. Remember, if the template DNA strand looks 5’ to 3’, then your mRNA will be written 3’ to 5’ under it. But the codon chart is 5’ to 3’, so you have to remember to “flip” your mRNA so it’s in the 5’ to 3’ direction. If you were given a DNA coding strand in a problem and you were asked to translate the mRNA product into amino acids, you would just “replace” all the T’s with U’s in the DNA coding strand to get your mRNA product. mRNA is in the same direction as the coding strand, so if the coding strand is 5’ to 3’, then your mRNA is also 5’ to 3’. Quiz 15 question: A single nucleotide change in the DNA led to the incorporation Arg into the protein, instead of Ser. What is the molecular basis of this mutation? A. All of the other answers are possible B. A changed to C C. T changed to A D. T changed to G E. C changed to A F. C changed to G Answer: A

Quiz 15 question solution: This question does not specify which DNA strand is of interest. Really, it does not matter. For the purposes of this question, you may want to assume that it’s the DNA coding strand that you’re looking at, so it’s identical to the mRNA except all the T’s become U’s. So you can think that in the answers, change all the T’s to U’s so you can directly apply it to the codon table (slide 17.19). According to the codon chart, you must locate all codons that code for Ser and Arg. Ser Arg UCU CGU UCC CGC UCA CGA UCG CGG AGU AGA AGC AGG Part B: A changed to C Part E: C changed to A Ser Arg Ser Arg A GU C GU AG C AG A A GC C GC Is possible. Is possible. Part C: T(U) changed to A Part F: C changed to G Ser Arg Ser Arg AG U AG A AG C AG G Is possible. Is possible. Part D: T(U) changed to G Ser Arg AG U AG G Therefore, since answers B through F are all Is possible. possible, answer A must be correct.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
