Ethan is a man who provides for his family and lives a plain married life. When Ethan is decided to leave his wife, be wrote her a note, that he never finished. He knew he could not leave her but he also wants to be happy. Zeena tried to make a home for Ethan but it just wasn't working out for them. Despite his troubles with money, love, and farming, Ethan still lives out 4
his American dream. He would be considered American because of the facts that he struggles, supports his family. Ethan trying to leave his wife, back in those days it was wrong but he tried to do it in a way that no one was hurt. Despite his feelings for Mattie, he still had moral values. Ethan has respect for his marriage and for Zeena but that gets weaker as his love for Mattie get stronger. By the end Ethan and Mattie were in love. The only way they could be together was through their death. Ethan and Mattie decided to comment suicide together but that did not work. Ethan ended paralyzed on his right side. Mattie would be injured for the rest of her life. Ethan and Mattie decided they would crash their sled to commit suicide but they survived. The day of the tragic accident, Zeena asked Ethan to stay with her. Zeena indeed loved Ethan for her to take him back and take care of him. Mattie is brought back in the home with Ethan and Zeena and now the roles change. Zeena is taking care of both Ethan and Mattie. Ethan Frome was a simple man who wanted to live the American Dream. He wanted to provide for his family and himself while doing his chores on his farm that he owned and at one time loved. Money was definitely an issue but not the only reason Ethan had trouble with achieving his dream. Ethan wanted to be where his heart was. The accident kept him from that happening but it also cost him is dream. Ethan was an American despite the hardships he may have lived through, he continued to push forward and never gave up until the last possible moment. Works Cited: 5
