Companies implement changes every day. Some changes are small, and may not be felt by the entire organization. However, large changes such as restructuring are felt by nearly everyone in the company. Although not all change is large, change in general will have an impact on the entire organization. Think of change as a pocket watch. All of the pieces of the watch need to function with each other for the watch to show the time. Take away any one of those elements, and the watch will most likely stop working. This same concept applies to the organization as well. Every department, position, and task was developed for a reason. When change is made to any of these, the company will feel the impact. For this reason, management must take care to make sure that the changes are made in a way that will not cause the company to stop functioning. Organizational Development Practitioners Not all change is easily accomplished by top management. Often, organizational development (OD) practitioners are brought on board to help manage the change process. OD practitioners are usually outside individual consultants who help companies make changes. Also referred to as change agents, they are brought in to help top management diagnose problems and implement solutions for change. Although diagnosis sounds more like a medical term, it applies to the process of identifying problems throughout the company. Techniques used to diagnose a company include employee surveys, questionnaires, focus groups, observation, and general exploration of the company’s processes. OD practitioners work with top management to determine the best way to manage change. Summary

This node discussed the determinants that drive change, including competition, innovation, technology, and globalization. Top management act as change agents and are responsible for ensuring that change happens efficiently and with as little resistance as possible. Companies that are able to identify and implement change proactively, experience strategic renewal, or the ability to plan change by watching the environment both internally and externally. Depending on the type and size of the change, management may decide to bring in OD practitioners to help with the change process.
