According to Sullivan (2013) A unit burdened by staff who bully and produce turnover is expensive to run (p. 284). Healthcare workers can be aggressive towards their coworkers, this is horizontal violence, also known as bullying or incivility. These behaviors can be mild to severe including; ignoring, belittling, making disparaging remarks, ridiculing, speaking sarcastically about a person, direct verbal abuse, sexual harassment, and physical attack (Sullivan, p. 341). I feel that leaders who have lost their "authenticity" can never regain the trust of their followers. In my case with my supervisor I have lost all respect for her. Although I feel very sad when I must drive a long distance to see my patient when I can be kept at my area, I had to develop thick skin, but I have colleagues who could not stand the behavior. As a visiting nurse there was a time where I had explained the plan of care to one of my patients. She felt it was different from the last assessment she got and was not in agreement with it. The plan of care was

not different, but the choice of words was different. I tried to let her know it was the same nothing had changed from her last assessment. There were things lost in translation because the patient did not understand medical jargon. I needed to use words familiar to the patient’s level of understanding, without being condescending (Sullivan, p. 157). All the patient wanted was clear communication. It had to take the intervention of her care manager and plan English for her to accept the plan of care. References Sullivan, E.J. (2013), Effective leadership and management in nursing (9 th ed.). The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
