instance.Table 6-4:MSTP instancesAs you see inFigure 6-31, this plan creates two spanning tree topologies, oneused by instance 1 (and 0) and one used by instance 2. The first topology usesthe uplinks between the access layer switches and Core-1, and the secondtopology uses the uplinks between the access layer switches and Core-2.Pass4sure - #1 IT Certifications Materials Provider
MSTP regionBefore you set up MSTP in the following set of tasks, you should understanda bit about the necessary configuration steps, including how to set up aregion. SeeFigure 6-32.Figure 6-32:MSTP regionThe MSTP region lets MSTP switches guarantee that they are using the sameVLAN-to-instance mappings. It consists of these settings:Region nameRevision numberInstance-to-VLAN mappingAll of the settings must match for switches to become part of the same MSTPregion. MSTP region incompatibilityWhen two connected switches run MSTP but do not have the same settings, they have an MSTP region incompatibility. Switches in different MSTPregions cannot use their instances because they do not know that they mapthe same VLANs to these instances. Therefore, the switches use RSTPbetween each other. The ports between the regions, which are calledboundary ports have a forwarding or blocking state that applies toallinstances configured on the switch. As far as each switch is concerned, thedifferent MSTP region is an RSTP switch. (SeeFigure 6-33.)Figure 6-33:MSTP region incompatibilityThe ArubaOS switches operate in MSTP mode, so you cannot truly configureRSTP on them. Instead, when you want to use RSTP, you simply do notestablish any MSTP region settings. Because the switches have incompatibleregions, each switch is in its own MSTP region and looks look an RSTPswitch to its neighbors. All of the switches across the different regions, as well as any actual RSTPPass4sure - #1 IT Certifications Materials Provider
switches, establish a common internal spanning tree (CIST). The CIST electsa single root. MSTP switches use their instance 0 settings in the CISTelection. (The CIST is sometimes called just the common spanning tree[CST] when the connections between regions are emphasized.)Instance 0 is also called the internal spanning tree (IST). The IST connectsthe MSTP region to the rest of the CIST. The region selects one boundaryport—the one closest to the CIST root—as the region master port. In switchcommand outputs, you will see this port designated as a root port in the ISTand CIST.
