After reflecting upon my own personal experiences

This preview shows page 3 out of 3 pages.

After reflecting upon my own personal experiences with social media, I learned I may not as be as independent as I had always made myself out to be. Through my physical day to day experiences, I am constantly concerned with those I can connect with over the internet and those I hold dearest to me, which is what I believe deems myself as a sociocentric being. I also believe it plays a role in certain tendencies I have to prioritize the thoughts, feelings and overall well-being of those significant to me over my own. Similarly, regardless of my desire to post a photo on social media with a friend, if they did not approve of it, I would prioritize their necessities over my own desires. At the beginning of the chapter, a sociocentric being, and an egocentric being were simply to me, a selfish and a non – selfish individual. With my increased knowledge, I have learned that there is much more complexity between the two terms. As I continue to expand my knowledge on these two concepts, I am able to recognize the social identity in which I choose to conform. When exploring the topics discussed throughout this chapter, one might find themselves posing questions such as “who am I?”, “who do I want to be?”, and “where do I belong?”. These types of questions when figuring out one’s self identity allows the individual to place themselves in a community which best fits their social codes.
