and Proletariat.” “The modern bourgeoisie is itself the product of a long course of development…” “Owing to the extensive use of machinery and to division of labour, the work of the proletarians has lost all individual character, and consequently, all charm for the workman. He becomes an appendage of the machine, and it is only the most simple, most monotonous, and most easily acquired knack that is required of him.” -explicit: alienation of labor (when im no longer making things for my own use-making them to mass produce them it makes it almost as if im prostitutionating myself-this process im engaged in is really depersonalizing-so becomes very alienated/estranged-u also become estranged from the product of your labor-you feel alienated from the process and product and makes you feel yucky about yourself-you become alienated from your own humanity and the humans around you) individual craft to manufacturing in factory causes alienation - inexplicit: commodification of labor- refers to the notion that once we get into major manufacturing ppl are no longer making their own things in their own workshops-if I don’t have a product to sell what can I sell instead to make money in the capitalist economy-sell my labor: my time and my energy *commodification: selling products how do you suppose Marxist ideas how to put a cost on materials-put a price on labor- how would you put a price on the labor -what does it take to have this person show up and be here-feeding them housing them etc. * we have become no more than an extention of the machine “The bourgeoisie . . . has reduced the family relation to a mere money relation.” -the purpose of the family becomes to make money by serving as cogs in the capitalist machine. Accordingly, the relationship among family members shifts. (this was in Johnsons chapter 3) –capitalism makes us look outside-makes us look at our value in the market instead of sticking to family- CAPITALISM AFFECTS EVERYTHING including family “The bourgeoisie has subjected the country to the rule of the towns…It has agglomerated populations, centralized means of production, and has concentrated property in a few hands.” -the owners become wealthy bc they learn how to make a profit 1. Urbanization 2. The increasing wealth of owners

“Modern industry has established the world-market, for which the discovery of America paved the way…The bourgeoisie has through its exploitation of the world market given a cosmopolitan character to production and consumption in every country.” We are spreasing capitalism EVERYWHERE -Marx forsees economic globalization: the movement of capitalism throughout the world “The execution of the modern State is but a committee for managing the common affairs of the whole bourgeoisie.” -Marx believes that ALL social institutions (“super structure”) arise from-and for the sake of-the material/economic base. That includes religion, education, etc.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
