Client: I could try Counselor : Ok what are your strengths? What motivates you? Client: (pause) I use to run track in college, I got a 4-year scholarship in college Client : smile Counselor : Ok what are your goals in life, what have you always wanted to accomplish Client: no hesitation run a marathon (self-efficacy, goals and achievements) 5
MI Script Counselor : (pause) ok you know marathons are extremely hard on your joint, muscles and heart, that would mean cutting back on alcohol of course, eating healthy lots of water Clients: absolutely (Developing autonomy) Counselor : That’s a start. How do you link we should start? Client: maybe I can put a limit on my drinking in a day. Counselor : Would it be alright to have your wife track you and keep you accountable to our set goal. Client: It would be fine, but I still don’t think it would work. Counselor : I can understand your feelings. But let’s try it and see how it goes. Client: sounds alright ready to prove you wrong Counselor : We will see hope you take this seriously because your family is counting on you 6
