enlightenment is largely responsible for the governments and political philosophies of most of the countries in the world today.The French Estates- France under the ancient regime divided society into 3 estates: the first estate (clergy), the second estate (nobility), and the third estate (commoners).Napoleon Bonaparte- A French military and political leader who rose to prominence during the French Revolution and led several successful campaigns during the Revolutionary wars and conquered much of Europe in the early 19thcentury. In France, he created many modern institutions and thus saved one partof the heritage of the French Revolution. In Europe, his conquests brought with them the ideas of the French Revolution. This was like a liberation for those dissatisfied with the former institutions (ex: Jews, some peoples under foreign domination like Poles, Croatians....)The Haitian Revolution- A successful anti-slavery and anti-colonial insurrection that took place in former French colony of Saint Domingue that lasted from 1791 until 1804. It impacted the institution of slavery throughout the Americas. The Haitian Revolution was the only slave uprising that led to the founding of a state free from slavery and ruled by non-whites and former captives.Abolitionism- A movement to end slavery. In western Europe and the Americas, abolitionism is a historical movement to end the African and Indian slave trade and set slaves free. In the United States of America, it was an effort to end slavery in a nation that valued personal freedom and believed “all men are created equal.”Serfdom- The status of many peasants under feudalism. It was a condition of bondage and was the forced labor of serfs, on the fields of land owners. Serfs got protection in exchange for the right to work on the leased fields. Serfdom created a monetary income to their patrons who in turn generate taxes to his/her lord.The Industrial Revolution- A period which predominantly agrarian, rural societies in Europe and America became industrial and urban. Industrialization marked a shift to powered, special-purpose machinery, factories, and mass production. While industrialization brought about an increased volume and variety of manufactured goods and an improved standard of living for some, it also resulted in often grim employment and living conditions for the poor and working class.The Congress System- Efforts to ensure that there will be peace and no more fighting in Europe. Will oppose revolution anywhere it pops up and equalize power.The Revolution of 1848- A series of political upheavals throughout Europe. The revolutions were
