8) Starting with the Calvin cycle (the point where CO 2 is fixed) and working your way back through the metabolic pathways to glucose, what is the number of moles of ATP used in the process of making one mole of glucose? For this problem, assume the Calvin cycle produces glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate and you generate glucose from there. Also, do not include the ATP equivalents from NAD(P)H or FADH 2 , just actual ATP used during the synthesis. The Calvin cycle produces 2 glyceraldehyde-3-P molecules. Each of these involves the consumption of 9 ATP (18 ATP total). Taking glyceraldehyde to glucose does not involve the net gain or loss of ATP. Thus the total is 18.
