old woman – she is more complex than that. As the text states "The old people sat on the bench, still as statues. Never mind, there was always the crowd to watch." (Mansfield 5), Miss Brill shows that she is judging other elderly people. In this way, she is acting like a younger, sort of immature teenager. She separates herself from the other elderly people or those who act elderly. Question 4 In Katherine Mansfield’s story “Miss Brill,” the protagonist’s observations of other people give us insight into her own character in a number of ways. Miss Brill’s thoughts about the elderly couple, and particularly about the affectionate husband, help call attention to the fact that she is herself elderly but unmarried. She apparently has no attentive, affectionate male companion, as the other old woman does. Her observation of the two pairs of young couples again helps to highlight, through contrast, her own isolation and her own advanced age. Question 5 The conflict of this story is Miss Brill's lack of touch with reality. Miss Brill, as she herself says, is part of a play. What she does not realize is that the play she refers to is her life and that she is the only person in that play. When the man makes the comment, Miss Brill is brought back to reality. She finally realizes that her play is a one-person performance. In the end, Miss Brill resolves her conflict, but, at the same time, she is forced to face the true nature of her reality: loneliness.
