Respect and ParticipationRespect is essential to this course. I respect each and every one of you as scholars and as people. Byengaging with my course, it is expected that you respect your fellow classmates, your instructor, yourundergrad TAs, as well as your graduate TAs as well. This means showing up, getting the most out ofevery class, and maintaining a conscious, distraction-free demeanor.Discussion and in-class participation are critical in psychology. This course material applies to youreveryday life and throughout the course you will be asked to reflect this relevance with others. I do notexpect every one of my students to find their voice in front of all their classmates, but participation duringpartner-based discussions is an expectation for all students (reflect on how this also relates to respect).TechnologyResearch shows that students perform best when they take notes by hand and translate the informationinto their own words. Studies also show thatother students’use of technology is the highest distractor inthe classroom. I will not be banning technology, but I will ask that students carefully consider how theirdecision to use technology may impact themselves and others. If technology is used, it should be for note-
