“African American Migration” explains where they should go and if they should in fact
leave at all, after the Civil War. There were a few reasons that making the decision to leave or
not was not taken lightly. Staying in the south meant that it would be easier to find work, since
they were skilled at their old jobs, such as farming. Leaving to go to the north could be seen as
easier since some of the northern cities supported equality. The places they went to in the south
was usual Richmond, Atlanta, and a few other places. There were also promised lands, these
were places that were viewed as “best” to move to and live their lives as free citizens.
