Chronic venous insufficiency : Common among elderly. S/S include chronic swelling; thick, brownish skin around ankles; itchy, scaly skin. Venous stasis ulcers occur which can lead to infection and cellulitis (see p. 421) TX: TED hose, elevation for 8 out of 24 hrs. Avoid prolonged sitting, standing, and sleep with FOB elevated 6 inches. Avoid tight clothing, crossing legs, and elevate legs whenever possible Venous Disorders (cont.)

Venous Stasis Ulcers: (See p. 421) Diabetic pt’s at increased risk. Very slow to heal. Begins as small, tender, inflamed area. Proper skin care for diabetics imperative. TX: Leg elevation, moist dressing, compression. Culture done to determine infection. Cleanse wound w/saline or mild soap. Lotion to keep skin moist around ulcer. May take weeks to months to heal. If arterial insufficiency is also present, do not use compression stockings. For severe wounds, debridement and grafts placed. Venous Disorders (cont.)
