Ever since most of the people in medina (Yathrib), were converted to Islam. Mohammad stopped praying towards Jerusalem when he was rejected by the Jews and therefore faced Mecca, hence Muslims face Mecca. Eventually Mohammad took Mecca and tore down every idol to rebuild the Kaaba with the black stone and made Mecca the most Holy city of Islam, Boa (1990:68) . Boa states that “By the time he died he was ruler of all Arabia”, (Boa, 1990:69) . 2.2 Beliefs and Practices 2.2.1 The five pillars The creed of the Muslim faith is straight forward, ‘There is no God but God, and Muhammad is the Prophet of God’. Which is required to recite aloud at least once, understood with the mind and out of the heart, until death, Anderson (1985:118). Regarding prayer in the Islam faith, you as are required to pray 5 times a day at certain hours, you may pray alone, in company or in the mosque, as long as you pray in Arabic and follow the set of words and forms prescribed. 3

Attendance in the congregational prayers at noon every Friday is very important, although prayer isn’t of much value unless purity rituals are performed. Fasting for Muslims happens on a year, during the time of Ramadan, in the 9th month of the Muslim year, to which all Muslims are subject to partake, for a whole month, from sunrise to sunset, except the nursing mothers, young children, pregnant woman, travellers and the sick. During this time no substances may be consumed, no water, no foods even any smoking or sexual intercourse, Anderson (1985:119). The Muslim faith also involves almsgiving – giving to the needy. It is required that you give a 40th of your money and merchandise, a 10th / 20th of produce from your land. These legal alms are a must and is called zakat, which is different to the “freewill offerings”, Anderson (1985:120). Finally the fifth pillar to the Muslim faith is known as the pilgrimage. During this time Muslims who can afford it can partake in this tradition. Muslims set out to Mecca, the significant meaning behind it is that every step towards the Ka’ba atones for sin and if they die, their name will appear on a list of martyrs, Anderson (1985:120). 2.2.2 Six Articles of the Islam faith p 38 GOD – Even in the Qur’an it is visible that there is a fundamental concept regarding God’s unity. The Muslims view as something different to the humans He created, which in turn makes it impossible to be convinced about anything of Him. Although, Orthodox Islam believes God is in control of creation every moment and keep on being in control through continual miracles, they also believe that God is the father of both good 4

and evil. They also believe that he is supreme, therefore isn’t influenced by any laws or principles and that his characteristics are revealed through the most beautiful names which are allegedly 99, Anderson (1985:115). Angels – Muslims also believe in angels, of which only four are acknowledged Gabriel (as the messenger of revelation), Michael (as the guardian of the Jews), Israfil (the one who summons resurrection) and Izra’ill (as the messenger of death). Their belief is that angels are created out of light, ranked according to their obedience to the will of God and that they don’t eat, drink or breed. Muslims also believe that angels
