Scheduling Monitoring Observing WORK BREAKDOWN STRUCTURE PROJECT MANAGEMENT FOR STRATEGIES The work breakdown structure is a critical tool in determining the projects total resource requirements. The Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) lays out and defines the full scope of the work required to complete the project. The WBS displays the full scope in a way that shows how each of the work elements relates to the goals of the program and each other. A WBS is a different document than the Project Schedule; the project schedule illustrates “When” and “Who” where the WBS defines the “What” of the project. A WBS can be used to determine the following: Project management requirements Assessing Project Risk Human resources management Performance Management and tracking Project financial management Resource Acquisition Budgets and financial management Project schedule and timeline Continual improvement management for the project life cycle When writing a WBS, it is important to remember only to use nouns and adjectives to define work. Then you will be sure that you are writing your WBS in a clear and detailed manner. A clearly written and specific WBS will be a highly useful tool for planning and track the progress and success of a project as well as define the resource requirements. A WBS demonstrates the interrelationships between work portions by decomposing project work into smaller more manageable parts. It is important when breaking the project work down that we do not break it down too far however as this will result in an ineffective to do list and confuse the purpose of the WBS.
