Maxim: When one utilizes sweatshops and outsourcing, one will use all available resources to uphold human dignity. Corporations outsourcing and using international sweatshops to lower costs for consumers. Lowering costs for consumers helps promote over production and help feed the dependence effect. Using people as ends rather than means, which is against Kantian ethics. Respect for persons principle: Can’t treat a human as a means to and ends. Epicurus: avoidance of pain Avoiding the pain of this information allows for the suffering of others to continue Singer: obligation to assist Could prevent poverty and injury without significant sacrifice Counter Arguments: Utilitarianism View- Greatest happiness principle- seek the greatest net balance of happiness summed over every individual. However, the happiness is an unquantifiable amount Business standpoint- it is the responsibility of a business to increase profits. However, consumers and shareholders have the power to not purchase or invest from those businesses that use these practices.
