The Carolinas-Their leaders were appointed by the king and had headright systems. There was religious freedom for all Christian faiths. Had a representative assembly so they could attract Americans rather than English. At first they failed to profit from it but Anthony Ashley Cooper helped them survive. convinced others to come to the Americas, and established Port Royal in 1670. then founded Charleston 10 years later and it became the colonial capital. The Fundamental Constitution of Carolina was written is 1669, which divided the colony into counties and established a hierarchy system with proprietors on top, local aristocracy next, then the settlers and at the bottom were the poor whites and slaves, who had very little political rights. The north and the south were very different socially and economically and separated. North was farmers and the south had harbors and fertile lands. They started growingand trading rice. The south was very like the island of Barbados, Barbadians even immigrated toAmerica and they took up most of the population. In 1729 the king divided it into North and South Carolina as royal colonies.New York and New Jersey- The duke of York, James got a charter for the land between Connecticut and Delaware, but the Dutch already claimed it. it was New Netherland but the English got the governor to surrender. the Dutch tried to retake it but eventually lost to the English. The duke renamed it New York and many different people groups were there English, Dutch, Scandinavians, Germans, French and Africans and Indians. James didn’t impose Catholicism and gave power to a governor and council. He gave part of his land to political alliances Sir John Berkeley and Sir George Carteret. It was named New Jersey but wasn’t very profitable so berkeley sold his half. Were split for a while but then rejoined, it was very similar to New York, diverse in religion and ethnicity but didn’t have a class of landowners.Quakers- Meaning “Quake in the fear of god”, the Quakers were peaceful and very tolerant of everyone else. They did not believe in predestination, they believed all people could attain salvation. They disregarded class and gender when in church so everyone could speak freely. William Penn got the land because the king owed his father debt and he named it Pennsylvania.Pennsylvania was very prosperous because it had good soil, a mild climate and Penn had a good relationship with the Indians. William Penn- He founded Pennsylvania, was a wealthy aristocrat. he helped Pennsylvania thrive by making peace with the Indians. He respected them, let them keep their lands because Quakers didn’t participate in war. Caribbean island/sugar- The islands were one of the first places that people started settling in.
