Text Dependent Questions Some of the text dependent questions are: 1. Who is telling the story 2. What do you think about the zoo keepers’ decision to starve John? 3. What do you think about the army’s decision to kill all of the animals? 4. What do you think the author is trying to show you by using the words petals, softbreeze and sparkling? 5.Explain how the decision is difficult for the zoo keepers’ because the elephants donot understand what is going on, based on the text what might they be thinking?
activity students’ will revisit their word packets and make any changes they may need to make based on discussion of words and phrases in the text. Content Area Concepts Related to the TextThe content area is ELA and it will be related through the discussion of specific text through text analysis and writing. The students will be performing specific tasks suchas writing down specific words or phrases in the book that have specific meaning and thiswill be determined by the concept they are learning. One example is learning the deeper meaning behind words and phrases, that will be done by writing down specific words anddiscussing their meaning to this text and if the word was changed or written in a different way how that would change the texts message.Integrating TechnologyTechnology is a huge part of a students learning environment, not all activities require technology to be used but it is important to find a way to incorporate technology at some point. Where this activity is more focused on the questions and discussion, technology is used as a precursor to reading the text. A summary is given to students about the book and they are to use educational research databases to determine what they believe the text is going to tell them. The students’ will make their own opinion from their research and write a paragraph on what they believe the story is trying to teach us. Using technology as a learning tool is best in the activity as it activates background knowledge, beings to open their mind to all possibilities and gets them thinking about the text before they begin to read so they may form their own conclusion and inferences. Text Complexity, Word Study and Close Reading
This activity was really focused and though it is appropriate for 4thgrade, I used itwith a group of students who read above this level. I needed to take a group of students’ who are above average but still have some areas that if not worked on could come back after summer vacation and have regressed. I used text complexity with this group because
