From childhood boys and girls are raised with different expectations in life, this is most reflected as an adolescent starts to get older and more involved with peers. It is expected that males take on more dominant characteristics than females. Males are also not to show as much emotion or weakness, as these are typical characteristics associated with females. Males are supposed to be strong, and independent so lacking these expected gender characteristics would be seen as being weak or effeminate. Adolescent females today are living in a society that more doors and opportunities are open to them which were non-existent in the past. This is a result of the continuous change of the social expectations of gender, which is influenced by the change in the gender roles we see today. It is

GENDER ROLES 4 also in this light that most gender functions in the society are affected by the environment and that people live in and by the specific needs of the community. Gender roles also vary based on the cultural backgrounds of the population of the US. For instance, in most of the old Native American tribes, the cultures were matriarchal whereby women took most seats of leadership while in the Asian and the European societies, men were well known to be in the political power positions. It is then evident that depending on the period and time; gender roles tend to vary drastically. From the social constructionist theories of gender roles, all gender roles in the US are culturally and historically dependent. It then sheds light on different cultures have different gender roles in the United States. Before feminism took over in the 1960s, women were primarily responsible for handling home matters whereas men used to work outside their homes to earn money for the family which most people termed as a division of labor where a specific segment performs a given task, and the other performs the other. This goes into how young girls have that nurturing component since from childhood girls were expected to play with baby dolls in a dollhouse; this simulates future caregiving roles girls will eventually take in the future. For young boys, future male-oriented characteristics can be seen earlier in life, as seen in childhood wrestling, sports, etc. In the US society, there is a lot of pressure for women to be young, thin and beautiful more than it used to be in the past decades. Most photo manipulation powers tend to allow advertisers to advertise women with images that are not realistic. This is very poisonous to society because it is accompanied by the expectations of young girls, which later distort their perceptions of beauty. Most of these ads tend to insult and objectify women bodies and profoundly affect the idea of female beauty. It is through this self-
