Architectural internal provision must be made for physically challenged. 4.3.11.3 Bars, grills, covers and screens Bars, grills, covers, screens or other obstructions placed over emergency escape and rescue openings or window wells that serve such openings shall be releasable or removable from the inside without the use of a key, tool or special knowledge. 4.3.12 Exits 4.3.12.1 Minimum exit door At least one exit door shall be provided in each dwelling unit. The required exit door shall provide for direct access from the habitable portions of the dwelling to the exterior without requiring travel through a garage or kitchen. PCTTS 599: 20XX 49 4.3.12.3 Type and size of exit doors The required exit door shall be a side-hinged door that allows a clear opening not less than 900 mm in width and 2025 mm in height. Other exterior hinged or sliding doors shall not be required to comply with these minimum dimensions. 4.3.12.4 Hallways The minimum width of access to a hallway or exit facilities shall be 1 m. 4.3.12.5 Exit facilities Exit facilities such as exterior exit balconies and stairs shall be positively anchored to the primary structure at not more than 2.40 m on centre or shall be designed for lateral forces. Such attachment shall not be accomplished by use of toenails or nails subject to withdrawal. 4.3.13 Pedestrian ramps Ramps shall have a minimum width of 1.0 m and minimum clear width of 0.9 m. The maximum slope shall be 10 percent. Handrails shall be provided on at least one side of all ramps. 4.3.14 Landings 4.3.14.1 Exit doors There shall be a floor or landing on each side of an exit door. The floor or landing shall not be less than the width of the door served and not more than 35 mm lower than the top of the threshold. 4.3.14.2 Stairway landings Landings shall be provided at the following locations: a) at the top and bottom of stairways; b) where a stairway changes direction; and c) at a maximum interval of 12 risers along the stairway. The width of the landing shall not be less than the width of the stairway served. Landings shall be a minimum of 0.9 m long in the direction of travel. Where a door opens unto a stairway, the landing shall be at least 1.5 m long in the direction of travel through the door. Figure 4-25 illustrates different types of stairways with landings.
