Your DNA model represents only a short length of the DNA portion of the chromosome. An entire chromosome has thousands of rungs rather than only six. Although your model is only a small part of a chromosome, its replication is the same as that of an entire chromosome. 19. Open your DNA model along the point of attachment between the base pairs (rungs) and separate the two ladder halves. A chromosome unwinds and unzips in a similar way prior to replication. Move the right side of your DNA molecule (the unpasted side) to a separate sheet of paper). Paste down this separated side with the upright portion of the ladder against the edge of the paper (leave room for the new half the DNA ladder to attach). 20. Using your newly pasted DNA strand (the right side) as a template, add nucleotides to complete the DNA model. Paste the completed molecule to your paper. 21. Build a second DNA model using the left side strand, but DO NOT PASTE the new strand yet. 22. Do the two new molecules contain the same number of rungs? ______________ 23.
