warned Everyman of the journey that awaited him, he pleaded for delay buying time to find someone to accompany him. Everyman’s purpose is to point out the spiritual danger he is facing and the process of salvation before his death. It also focuses on how people put the material possessions and affairs of this world before God. “The characters of the play were allegorical because they were not individual personalities, but embodiments of moral qualities and abstractions” (Morality play, 2014). Everyman was allotted the opportunity to seek out companions to walk this journey with him. Horrified, Everyman turned to his friend Fellowship, who vowed to travel with him but soon after hearing of Everyman’s destination, he abandoned him. Everyman was certain he could depend on his family no matter what but in the face of death they too left him alone. Everyman have high hopes that his Goods will bring him contentment and comfort on his journeyed on to death. He was certain after he had spent his life accumulating things in them he had everything only to find out not even his material possessions could accompany him on his journey. Amid his hopelessness and distress, Everyman was desperate enough to call on his Good Deeds. Even though, his Good Deeds are few compared to his sins, she answers from the dirt in a weak voice but couldn’t pull herself up. When he called on Good Deeds, she found herself bound. “Here I lie, cold in the ground; thy sins had me sore bound, that I cannot stir” (486-488). Good Deed advises Everyman to seek counsel from his Knowledge. Knowledge prepared Everyman for Confession of his sins. Everyman’s lesson was that salvation is a result of the confession of his sins. After true confession Good Deeds gained her strength and was able to pull herself up from the dirt to accompany Everyman on his journey.Good Deeds and Knowledge advised Everyman to call upon his other traits: Beauty, Strength, Discretion and Five Wits to help him further prepare for his journey. Beauty, Strength, Discretion and Five Wits could not go the whole distance with Everyman. Each of these
RESEARCH PAPER 5characters joyfully vowed their support in offering Everyman wisdom on his final journey. However, as Everyman approaches the grave, each one fell back. Beauty is the first to abandon him, then Strength and Discretion followed by his own Five Wits. Everyman acknowledged to Good Deeds that his true friends had forsaken him but inquired if whether Good Deeds would abandon him. “Everyman said, “Gramercy, Good Deeds! Now may I true friends see. They have forsaken me, everyone; I loved them better than my Good Deeds alone. Knowledge, will ye
