2 correlated variables are predictive of each other Example: Are exposure to media violence and aggressive behavior correlated? If YES: people who watch more media violence then we predict people are more likely to act aggressively OR aggressive people are more likely to watch violent media If NO: one variable does not predict the other Correlation Coefficient {r} : statistic that measures correlation -1 or +1 2 key components: direction and size Direction: positive or negative sign Positive (between 0 and +1): increase in one variable predicts increase in the other 2.
E.g. height and weight E.g. health and income level E.g. IQ score and problem-solving ability Negative (between 0 and +1) increase in one variable predicts decrease in the other E.g. illness and vaccination E.g. self-esteem and depression Zero correlation: no relationship between the variables Size: numbers Bigger correlations (closer to +/-) = more predictive Smaller correlations (closer to 0) = less predictive Small (-0.29 to -0.10) or (+0.10 to +29) Medium

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
