traditions that see no difference between public names and pet names. The principal of the schoolsupports him after realizing that his legal name was Gogol despite fathers (Ashoke) objection. During the class trip at the cemetery, Gogol realizes how he has a unique name since it is seen nowhere in tombstones. During his teenage life, Gogol lived in India (Calcutta) for eight months. He felt out of place at Calcutta, where his parents call home. Once they get back to America, Gogol tries to adapt to "normal" American existence and forget about India vacation. Gogol hates his name, even more, when his English teacher narrates a short story about the Russian author named Gogol on how he had an unhappy life. Before joining college at Yale, he legally changes his name to Nikhil, and the judge asks him why he is changing the name. Gogol responds, “I hate the name Gogol, and I have always hated it". He introduces himself as "Nikhil" at college and avoids associating with fellow Bengalis because they remind him of the traditions his parents tried to force him to adapt. After graduating from the University of Colombia, he found a job in New York and lived in a small apartment. At New York, he met withhis fellow graduate named Maxine and soon Gogol is spending so many nights with Maxine that he barely seems to live in his tiny apartment anymore. Maxine gave him house keys and encouraged him to think of the house as his. He loves all the ways their life is different from his Bengali upbringing, but he can't help feeling that he doesn't quite belong. Gogol lived in New Hampshire he was on vacation with Maxine and celebrated his birthday there in a meaningful way.
