These differences can be used to an individual’s benefit if he or she pursue to establish the nature and composition of any radiation he or she is researching. Chemistry of DNA Four bases and hydrogen bonds are the building blocks of DNA. DNA is the building block of life. The four bases are adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine. Adenine, cytosine, thymine, and guanine are created by bonds and varying configurations of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and hydrogen. Along a double-helix strand of DNA, the order in which these bases occur is important because in groups of three consecutive bases, a protein is formed. Each protein provides a code for a specific characteristic of the plant or animal. From brightness of color present on petals or in eyes, to the behavior in phototropism or mental health, these characteristics are a result of the order of the bases creating the proteins in every plant and animal (Tro, 2009). Beyond the four bases, hydrogen bonding exists and ensures that each base has a match that is an exact partner in a chemical pair. Hydrogen bonding allows cytosine to connect to guanine and adenine to connect to thymine. When bases can connect to their partner, cell reproduction is an exact science and creates offspring in cell division, which are exact replicas of the original cell. Further, the bases, hydrogen bonds, and phosphates create a nucleotide. A nucleotide is a unit of the DNA strand and with its three components creates the coding, connection for reproduction, and structure of the DNA double-helix (Tro, 2009).
