4. What are the sources of misunderstanding between the Ibo and the Christian missionaries? The Ibo religion consists of many gods and goddesses who have died‚ but are worshipped through idols and icons. The concept of one God who lives confuses the tribe, as does the idea of a Holy Trinity. They do not understand how there can be a father and son, but no mother. The Ibo could not accept that Christians would welcome the outcasts and twins into their group. Yet, because the Ibo believe that their gods would handle any conflict or misunderstandings, they refuse to be an obstruction to the missionaries at first.

Teacher’s Page Things Fall Apart Part Three Chapter 21 Creating an Advertisement Objective: Creating a flyer or brochure Activity As the first white missionary in Umuofia, Mr. Brown is faced with bringing members of the Ibo tribe into his church. He has an interpreter, but the Ibo are ignorant of the white man’s ways; therefore‚ Mr. Brown must use other means to draw the Ibo into the Christian flock. Design a flyer or brochure that Mr. Brown could distribute throughout Umuofia promoting his church services. Keep in mind that there is a language barrier and that most of the information will need to be in a visual‚ rather than written‚ form. Be creative! Flyers or brochures can be done on a computer, by hand, or in the form of a collage. Note to Teacher: Remind students that the use of written language would be useless to the Ibo who neither speak nor read English.
