done sample contained “4694 white and 177 black men with college education, and 766 white men with no college education. For the women, there were 4358 white and 223 black with college education, and 1028 with no college education” (Bancroft N.p).After collecting all of his data, he published his first book.In 1948, Kinsey’s first book was published. The book was called Sexual Behavior in the Human Male. The book was split into three parts and talked about the history, factors affecting sexual outlets, and the sources of a sexual outlier. The history portion talked about how Kinsey got the data, the factors were about the age, marital status, and the sexual behavior of the volunteers. The sources of sexual outlier delved deeper into specific forms of sexual behavior, including nocturnal emissions, masturbation, and sexual intercourse” (PBS N.p). When Kinsey’s first book was published, it changed how people would look at sexual behavior. In his research of5300 men he found that: 90% of the American males had masturbated 85% had had premarital intercourse, 70% had patronized a prostitute at least once in their lives, almost 60% had had oral sex, and 30% to 45% had had extramarital intercourse. But most shocking was the revelation that some 37% of American males had had at least one homosexual encounter in their lives. 17% of the farm boys had sexual relationshipwith an animal. (PBS N.p)
When this data was shown to the public, many people were shocked by Kinsey’s report. They were shown that there was more to sexual behavior than they let on. Majority of the population seemed to approve the book. When people saw that there were a larger percentage of American males masturbating they started to wonder if masturbation was considered a mental problem. As people started to question their sexuality, there were other people who disapproved of Kinsey’s findings. Nevertheless, he was glad at his newfound fame. Kinsey used newfound fame to help change some of the country’s sex laws. The two major laws that were repealed weredeeming homosexuality and adultery a jailable offense (Wolfe 55). When his first book came out Kinsey had “blown the lid off the Victorian fiction that Americans simply did not have sex except within the bounds of marriage, and that to do anything differently was abnormal and wrong” (PBS N.p). In the case of homosexuality, Kinsey argued that there was no need to put homosexual into two separate categories. Kinsey created a new category that established a person’s sexual preference. Kinsey called this category the Kinsey scale. The seven categories would go as follows:0: Exclusively heterosexual with no homosexual, 1: Predominantly heterosexual, only incidentally homosexual, 2: Predominantly heterosexual, but more than incidentally homosexual, 3: Equally heterosexual and homosexual, 4: Predominantly homosexual, but more than incidentally heterosexual, 5: Predominantly homosexual, only incidentally heterosexual, and 6: Exclusively homosexual. (Robinson 73)By creating this scale Kinsey could eliminate the belief that if a person commits a homosexual act then that person must be a homosexual. This scale allowed for a range of possibilities in
