Showboating was strictly prohibited with severe consequences . Fighting and swearing were equally frowned upon . This is one thing that I believe was a major contributing factor to our team’s success . The respect we showed to our opponents was reflected in the way we treated each other . This helped build team camaraderie and further oiled the clockwork that was our team . External Support and Recognition The support that our team received turned out to be a double-edged sword . We had a very strong fan support group from both our families and the student body of our school . A group of students would caravan to every game that we played to show us their support . This reinforced the belief that the goal we were striving for was a worthwhile venture . Unfortunately, the fan support was not the only recognition we were getting, and we ended up receiving much more than was healthy for the well-being of our team . Our success drew a lot of attention from the local media and the community . This changed the demeanor of our team from confident to cocky . We began to pass the blame of our own failures off onto the referees . Instead of recognizing mistakes and fixing them, we chalked it up to the other team getting lucky . Our cockiness got the best of us in the end . We stopped taking teams seriously thinking that no one could touch us . We too often underestimated our opponents, and it finally got the best of us . Principled Leadership I am confident that if you were to ask any member of that soccer team what the biggest factor of our success was, they will respond with one word: Shane . Our coach was by far the

Bourke most prominent factor in the success of our team . He possessed many of the traits that Larson and LaFasto list as key to effective leadership . He had a crystal clear vision of how he wanted the team to perform that radiated throughout the members of the team . He constantly reminded us why we were there and how possible it was for us to achieve our goals . He had over 20 years of coaching one of the most successful sports programs at Central . With over 300 wins, two state titles, complete absence of a losing season and quite a few “All- Ohio Coach of the Year” awards; his reputation preceded him . He had a brilliant knowledge of how the game was to be played and he instilled it in every one of us . He made sure that we were doing our best in every aspect of our lives, and not just on the field . He did not only have the ability to lead though, he had the ability to create leaders . Our team captains modeled themselves after our coach, reinforcing his points and values and instilling them in us as well . The most inspiring part of playing under Shane though, was that he was as heavily invested in the team as we were . When we played a game, it was like he was out on the field with us . Every goal we scored, you would have thought he scored himself the way he jumped off the bench and began hugging players . Shane’s dedication to the success of our team diffused into every player .

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
