I would try to encourage people to do research on people who they are stereotyping and try to have an open mind. I would also encourage them to learn more about the world and the different cultures because the world is so much larger than the environment they are surrounded by daily. People are not as privileged as others have been and that does not make them less valuable. Hi Christina, let me start by saying thank you for your point of view. I think we all do judge people based on other things besides character. Some people are willing to admit it and some others are not. I am one of the people who are willing to admit it and it seems like you are too. As I stated in my post,I do not see the harm if you are not thinking negatively. We all look at people and think about what type of person they are. Until we have the opportunity to get to know them, the only thing we have to base any thoughts on is their image. As we mature and have our own life experiences we learn how overcome judging people. Class, Do you think that that there is an injustice to students with other religions in our schools? Or do you think that they keep quiet about their religion if it is not Christian to avoid any bias?
Today my son is off school because the local school district has started to have Jewish holidays in their calendar year. Should districts honor all religious holidays for the different religions of their students. Sean Is there injustice to students with other religions in our schools? No, I do not. I think it is with in our schools best interests to celebrate major holidays that the majority of the school’s students celebrate. If enough of the school's population celebrates a specific holiday, than it should be honored. If there are not enough students to make it official than I am not sure what the solution would be. There would have to be some sort of middle ground for everyone. Sean, you stated that your son was off school because of a Jewish holiday. I am assuming your son school has a have population of Jewish kids? If not his school then maybe the district? What can you do as a teacher to manage the dynamics of difference in your classroom? As a teacher you can manage the dynamics in your classroom in many different ways. Personally I would create a judge free learning environment in my classroom. The first step would be to set standards that making judgmental comments in my classroom are unacceptable by addressing them when they occur. My goal is to create learning experience from those situations. Another way would be to give your students the opportunity to educate their classmates about themselves. Sometimes when you mix different people together it creates curiosity in your classroom. Give your students a chance to share about themselves with their classmates and it may help them have a better understanding of others.
